Sniffing PS3

Recently I have been trying to sniff the PS3. No, it’s not some new fetish, I am sniffing the packets. Problem is, I never get anything from the PS3, I have tried it with the browser, and with an online game, still nothing. I use Wireshark, and it works fine, but for some reason I just can’t capture anything from the PS3.

Last night I tried to get the PS3 to share my laptop connection (Internet Connection Sharing), but no joy. I have read tons of articles on how to do it, but nothing will work.

What’s my reason for capturing the PS3?

I do have a good reason for doing it, though don’t wish to share why, or more specifically what I am trying to capture, as it will be a new project for me to allow the gaming community to use.

Has anyone else got any ideas? I have heard about something called a “CrossOver Cable”, but haven’t looked into that yet.

My setup is:

BT Home Hub
WLAN Card for laptop

So everything is wireless, PS3 connects to the hub, and the laptop connects to the hub via WLAN card. Some how I need to make the PS3 connect to my laptop so I can capture all the data.

  1. If you use Vista, I hear you can create a “Virtual Wireless Network”, that allows you to let other computers connect to yours as if it were a wireless router, and share files/play games and maybe even share an internet connection.

  3. I’m guessing by Crossover Cable you just mean a normal Cat5e x-over that’s used to connect two PC’s together through the ethernet port. Pretty standard =)

  5. Yeah, exactly that. Got one from eBay, just waiting for it to come.

Will post my results when I have done some testing with it.
